On May 20, 2024, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (MoFAHD), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India to improve the digitalization of vaccine cold chain management, capacity building, and communication planning at the UNDP Country Office in New Delhi, Delhi.
Aim: To improve animal health and husbandry practices by using UNDP’s experience and DAHD’s mission for a strong framework in India.
The MoU was signed by Alka Upadhyay, Secretary of the DAHD, and Caitlin Wiesen, UNDP Resident Representative in India.
What will be done under the MoU?
Under this agreement, UNDP will work with the DAHD to establish India’s first animal vaccination supply chain management system.
UNDP’s new technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Animal Vaccine Intelligence Network (AVIN) will allow for real-time monitoring of the massive cold chain infrastructure to guarantee vaccinations are managed and supplied countrywide at the appropriate amount, quality, timing, and temperature.
A One Health approach will be implemented, with a focus on digitalizing and remotely monitoring cold chains to ensure vaccines are stored at 2-8°C, thereby increasing immunization coverage, including the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination program, which will target 50 crore large and 20 crore small animals with vaccines worth Rs. 900 crore.
The Bengaluru, Karnataka-based Centre of Excellence for Animal Husbandry (CEAH) will get technical help to improve its animal husbandry techniques.
The MoU will also assist livestock insurance programs, enhance communication strategies for greater outreach, extension services, and skill development measures to strengthen the animal husbandry industry.

2) FIEO Projected India’s Merchandise to Grow USD 500 to 510 Billion in FY25
According to the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), India’s premier group for exporters, goods exports are predicted to expand by roughly 14%, reaching USD 500-510 billion in FY25 (2024-25).
India’s goods exports fell 3% to USD 437 billion in FY24 (2023-24).
Furthermore, it is predicted that service exports would total USD 390-400 billion in FY25.
As a result, the net worth of India’s total exports will be between USD 890 and 910 billion.
India’s overall exports were USD 788 billion in FY24.
Key Points:
According to FIEO, India’s traditional markets, the United States of America (U.S.A.) and Europe, as well as Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with Australia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), will benefit the country’s export industry.
- It identified important areas that can generate positive development in exports, including machinery, electrical and electronic, vehicle, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology.
- These sectors will benefit from the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes.
- It stated that demand for loans has surged as a result of rising inflation, high commodity prices, and large increases in sea and freight costs.
Maritime freight charges have risen from USD 700 to USD 37.00, with the major cause being the turmoil in the Middle East, which has resulted in lengthier trip times due to the diversion of maritime routes from the Red Sea to the Cape of Good Hope.
It stated that the United States has slapped fresh tariffs on Chinese commodities such as electronic vehicles (EVs), batteries, and high-end technological equipment, among others. China needs new markets with cheaper tariffs.
Thus, India must grasp this chance and close the supply deficit.
Key Recommendations:
- FIEO has advised that the Government of India (GoI) establish an export development fund to help Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India, with a budget allocation of 1% of previous year exports.
Target: Indian exports are predicted to rise from USD 778 billion in 2023-24 to USD 2000 billion in 2029-30.
- It stressed the need of including an export sub-goal inside the overall Priority Sector Lending (PSL) aim.

3) WB Report “Water for Shared Prosperity” Highlights Importance of Access to Safe Drinking Water
The World Bank and the Indonesian government jointly issued the worldwide flagship study “Water for Shared Prosperity” during the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia.
The study stressed the significance of access to safe drinking water and sanitation for both human and economic growth.
About the 10th World Water Forum:
- The 10th World Water Forum will be held from May 18th to 25th, 2024, with the subject “Water for Shared Prosperity”.
- The forum provides an opportunity for the water community and decision-makers to interact and create long-term progress on global water concerns.
About the report:
Significance: The study seeks to highlight the water difficulties and dangers faced by the poorest and most marginalized groups, and to inspire policies that promote water accessibility and climate resilience while reducing poverty and increasing shared prosperity.
Key Findings:
According to the research, 2.2 billion people would lack access to clean drinking water and 3.5 billion will be deprived of adequately managed sanitation by 2022.
Without access to safe drinking water and sanitation, at least 1.4 million people die each year, and 50% of the world’s population is malnourished.
The report identified four major components of prosperity: education (human capital), employment and income, peace and social cohesion (social capital), and the environment (natural capital).
According to the research, the number of people without access to clean drinking water and basic sanitation has grown by 197 million and 211 million, respectively, during the previous two decades.
Climate change is the primary cause of increased water-related hazards; poor nations are the most vulnerable to climate shocks as a result of massive increases in global emissions.
Between 2000 and 2021, developing nations had more severe droughts and prolonged flooding than developed ones.
The survey found that over 800 million people worldwide are at high danger of drought, with twice as many living in flood-prone areas.
Key Recommendations:
The paper recommends enhancing water security in poor nations by protecting dwindling aquifers, strengthening nature-based solutions like reforestation, and investing in water storage infrastructure.
It also underlined the need to improve housing and land use rules in order to reduce flood hazards.
Early Warning Systems (EWS) and insurance can assist homeowners and farmers deal with harsh weather events.
It also emphasized the necessity for major adjustments in water rates and subsidies to achieve equitable allocation of water resources.
Service providers could also improve their operations in order to decrease water losses and cut operating expenses.
Additional Information:
The first World Water Forum was convened in 1997 in Marrakesh, Morocco, to address the worldwide water shortage dilemma. The World Water Forum takes place every three years.
