1) SEBI revises Market Capitalization Computation Basis for LODR Regulations
On May 17, 2024, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) amended its Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements (LODR) Regulations, 2015 with SEBI (LODR) (Amendment) 2024, which revised the method for calculating the market capitalization of listed companies under the LODR Regulations.
- Instead of utilizing a single day’s market cap (formerly determined on March 31), SEBI now uses an ‘Average Market Capitalization’ over a certain time period.
- This amendment impacts eleven sections of the LODR Regulations, namely 3, 15, 17, 21, 25, 26A, 29, 30, 34, 43A, and 44. For Sub Regulations

2) Bank of Maharashtra tops among PSU banks in Business Growth in FY24; SBI FY24 net profit rises 21.59%
According to publicly available financial data, the Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) was the best performer among Public Sector Banks (PSBs) in terms of business growth for Fiscal Year 2023-24. BoM’s overall business (domestic) increased by a stunning 15.94% in FY24.
- State Bank of India (SBI) followed closely, growing at a pace of 13.12%.
- SBI’s entire business (deposits and advances) was much bigger at Rs 79,52,784 crore (approximately 16.7 times) than BoM’s Rs 4,74,411 crore.
- State Bank of India (SBI), India’s largest state-owned institution, reported strong Q4FY24 earnings, with a net profit of Rs 20,698.35 crore, up 24% from Q4FY23.

3) AIC Signs MoU with CSC to Widen “Sampoorna Pashudhan Kawach” across Rural India
Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd. (AIC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CSC e-Governance Services India Ltd. (CSC) at the AIC Head Office in New Delhi, Delhi, to expand the reach of its cattle insurance product “Sampoorna Pashudhan Kawach,” which is designed to protect farmers’ livestock from unforeseen risks.
CSC would act as a key distribution route under this MoU, using its enormous digital network of 6 million Common Service Centres (CSCs) across rural India.
Objectives:
This partnership intends to address difficulties faced by farmers, including inadequate veterinarian facilities in rural regions and a lack of information regarding livestock insurance advantages and protection.
Key Benefits:
- This cooperation will also include AIC’s other products, such as Saral Krishi Bima and Sampoorna Ritu Kavach.
- The whole process, including enrollment, claim assessment, and policy servicing, must be system-enabled.
CSC is a government-owned business that provides digital connectivity to numerous services in rural India.

4) BEML Secured Order Worth Rs 250 Cr from NCL to Supply BH100 Rear Dump Trucks
BEML Limited (previously Bharat Earth Movers Limited) has received a Rs 250 crore contract from Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) to provide 28 units of BH100 back dump trucks.
Under this order, the dumpers will be maintained with a 5-year Guaranteed Spare Parts contract, assuring operating efficiency.
The BH100 Rear Dump Truck has a payload capacity of up to 100 tonnes, making it perfect for heavy-duty mining activities.
The BH100, developed for overburden and coal mining, has a strong design, innovative features, and high operational efficiency.
BEML Limited is a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Defence that services India’s main industries, including defence and aerospace, mining and construction, and rail and metro.

5) ITC Chairman Sanjiv Puri Take Charge as President of CII for 2024-25
Sanjiv Puri, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of ITC Limited, was appointed President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the fiscal years 2024-25.
He succeeds R.Dinesh, Chairman of TVS Supply Chain Solution (TVS SCS), who served as President of CII from 2023 to 2024.

- Rajiv Memani, Chairman and CEO of Ernst & Young (EY) in India, has been named President-designate for 2024-25.

6) William Lai Ching-te Sworn in as 16th President of Taiwan; Bi-khim Hsiao Took Oath as Vice President (Current Affairs 21st May 2024)
Dr. William Lai Ching-te, a doctor turned politician, was sworn in as the 16th President of Taiwan (Republic of China (ROC)) during a ceremony at the presidential office in Taipei.
The First Lady and Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao both attended the inaugural ceremony.
William Lai Ching-te replaced Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan’s and Asia’s first female president, who had previously served two consecutive four-year terms from 2016.
Bi-khim Hsiao succeeded Lai Ching-te as Taiwan’s 16th vice president.
About Dr William Lai Ching-te:
- In 1994, he was a chief resident at the National Cheng Kung University Hospital, and in 1996, amid the Taiwan Strait Crisis, he quit medicine to pursue politics.
- He was elected to the Legislative Yuan in 1998 to represent Tainan City, and he served for four consecutive terms (1999–2010).
- In 2010, he was elected the first mayor of Tainan Special Municipality (a combination of Tainan County and Tainan City).
- In 2014, he was re-elected with 72.9% of the vote, the most in Tainan’s history and the highest for any county or city leader since martial law ended in 1987.
- He was Taiwan’s premier from 2017 to 2019. In 2020, he was formally sworn in as Taiwan’s 15th Vice President.
- In 2023, he became chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

7) ISRO’s Mangalyaan-2 Mission to Include Helicopter, Sky Crane, Rover for Navigation on Mars (Current Affairs 21st May 2024)
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced a complete blueprint for its future Mars mission, “Mangalyaan-2”. It was presented during a special presentation at the Space Application Centre (SAC) on the eve of National Technology Day (May 11, 2024).
With the successful launch of the Mangalyaan-2 mission, India will become the fourth country in the world to successfully land a spacecraft on Mars, following the United States of America (USA), Russia, and China.
Key Features:
ISRO intends to employ a Rover and helicopter for Mars exploration, comparable to NASA’s Perseverance Rover.
ISRO is currently developing a supersonic parachute and skycrane system based on NASA deployment procedures.
This deployment procedure will assure a safe and accurate landing of the Indian rover on Mars’ surface.
The Mangalyaan-2 mission will be launched using the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk III (LVM3).
ISRO will create technologies specifically designed to fulfill the particular requirements of the Indian rover, such as refining the sky-crane system and other crucial mission components to resist the harsh conditions of Mars.
It will design a fully functional helicopter capable of operating in Mars’ thin atmosphere.
It will be outfitted with a variety of scientific equipment, including the Martian Boundary Layer Explorer (MARBLE), which can reach heights of up to 100 meters (m), making it ideal for aerial exploration of Mars.
Prior to the mission’s launch, ISRO intends to install a relay communication satellite. It will employ the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) to provide seamless and uninterrupted communication between the Mars mission and Earth.

8) Blue Origin’s NS-25 mission Lifted off with 6 Crew Members Including One Indian (Current Affairs 21st May 2024)
On May 19, 2024, the New Shepard rocket system created by Blue Origin, the corporation controlled by Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, under the space tourism mission dubbed New Shepard-25 (NS-25), blasted off from Launch Site One in West Texas, United States of America (USA).
About NS-25 Mission:
- This is the seventh human spaceflight for the New Shepard program.
- To far, the program has flown 31 humans above the Karman line.
- The space flight flew through space at more than three times the speed of sound and crossed the Karman line.
- After spending time in zero gravity, the team returns by parachute.
Note: The Karman line is the globally recognized border line of space, located 62 miles (100 kilometers) above the Earth.
Gopi Thotakura, the 1st Indian Space Tourist:
- Gopi Thotakura, a commercial jet pilot and entrepreneur from Andhra Pradesh, India, is the only Indian among the six crew members on this human space voyage.
- He is the first Indian space tourist and the second Indian to travel into space, following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma of the Indian Army (1984).
- He co-founded Preserve Life Corp., a global center for holistic wellness and applied health near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the United States.
Other Crew Members:
- Captain Ed Dwight is the first Black astronaut in orbit. John F. Kennedy, the former President of the United States of America (U.S.A.), chose him in 1961.
- At 90 years old, Dwight became the oldest person to travel in space.
- He broke the record established by Canadian actor William Shatner, who traveled to space on a Blue Origin voyage in 2021, despite being two months older.
- The names of the other members are Mason Angel (USA), Sylvain Chiron (France), Kenneth L. Hess (USA), and Carol Schaller.
New Shepard Rocket :
- It is designed to transport humans into suborbital space aboard a crew capsule.
- It is totally reusable and can accommodate up to six passengers.
- New Shepard is named after NASA Mercury program astronaut Alan Shepard, who became the first American to travel in space in 1961.
- It runs on liquid oxygen and hydrogen, and the only byproduct is water vapour, with zero carbon emissions.
- Elon Musk launched the Starlink Satellite Internet Service in Indonesia.
- On May 19, 2024, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, launched the Starlink satellite internet service in Indonesia, the world’s biggest archipelago.
- It was launched in a community health center in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia.

9) IRRPL Handed Over 27,000 AK-203 Assault Rifles to Indian Army (Current Affairs 21st May 2024)
Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), located in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, handed delivered 27,000 AK-203 assault rifles to the Indian army. These assault weapons achieved 25% localization.
Within the next two weeks, the Indian Army will receive an additional 8,000 AK-203 assault rifles, further bolstering their arsenal.
Key Points:
- A special purpose Joint Venture (JV) known as Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) will build the first 70,000 rifles in India.
- The Korwa Ordnance Factory in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh will be the site of construction for these rifles. There, localization will progressively increase, starting at 5% and reaching 70%. In the meantime, the remaining rifles will be manufactured entirely using local components.
Key Features of AK-203 Assault Rifle:
- The Indian Army is scheduled to replace its indigenously built Indian Small Arms Systems (INSAS) rifles, which have been in service for over three decades, with these new rifles.
- The AK-203 assault rifle has a magazine capacity of 30 rounds. It has an effective range of 800 metres.
- It includes distinctive features including a folding and adjustable buttstock, a windowed and rifled magazine, and a pistol grip, which make it more ergonomic.
- It has a gas-powered, rotary bolt locking rifle that can fire 600 rounds in one minute.

It was formed in 2019 by the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), now known as Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL) of India, and Rosoboronexport (RoE), which owns Kalashnikov.
Background:
- In July 2021, Union Minister of Defence (MoD) Rajnath Singh and Russian Defence Minister General Sergey Shoigu inked a contract for Rs 5,124 crore.
- The joint venture between India and Russia sought to produce over 6.1 lakh (7,01,427) 7.63×39mm AK-203 assault weapons.
- The deal also included a condition requiring Russia to surrender all of its technology, allowing them to export to friendly foreign governments.

10) 3AI Holding & SML Launched India’s GenAI Platform ‘Hanooman’ (Current Affairs 21st May 2024)
3AI Holding, an Abu Dhabi-based AI investment firm, and Seetha Mahalaxmi Healthcare (SML) India have launched India’s homegrown generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) platform ‘Hanooman AI’, an Indian large language model (LLM) in 98 global languages, including 12 Indian languages, as well as text translation capabilities.
The twelve Indian languages are Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi, Assamese, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Sindhi.
The platform intends to assist four sectors: healthcare, government, financial services, and education.
The Hanooman platform takes a two-pronged approach, aiming to provide both an open-source alternative to commercial LLMs for those who prefer transparency and collaboration, while simultaneously addressing the needs of enterprises by offering a closed-source paradigm for on-premise solutions that prioritize control and security.
Hanooman’s features may support informal talks, expert guidance, and complicated technological jobs such as coding and teaching.
SML India has collaborated with HP, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), Yotta, the Government of Telangana, and the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) on this effort.

11) Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the doubles title in BWF Thailand Open 2024 (Current Affairs 21st May 2024)
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty of India won the men’s doubles championship in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Thailand Open Super 500 badminton competition 2024, which took place in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 14 to 19, 2024.
The world number three Indian pair won the championship by defeating China’s 29th-ranked Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi.
This was their second tournament victory of 2024 and their second Thailand Open championship, having won it in 2019.
Note: The triumph earned the Indian duo 9200 ranking points and USD 33180 in prize money.

14) Iran President Ebrahim Raisi Passed away; Mohammad Mokhber Takes Charge as Interim President (Current Affairs 21st May 2024)
Following the reported death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter accident in northern Iran, Iran’s first vice president, Mohammad Mokhber, was nominated as interim president for 50 days (before to necessary presidential elections).
Following the crash that killed Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s government cabinet chooses Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani as interim foreign minister.
Mohammad Mokhber’s appointment to the presidency will require the consent of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

- Iran’s constitution states that if the president dies, is absent, or becomes disabled while in office, the vice president takes over.
- Iran’s first vice president is the second most powerful figure in the elected body of government after the president.
