On May 17, 2024, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) amended its Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements (LODR) Regulations, 2015 with SEBI (LODR) (Amendment) 2024, which revised the method for calculating the market capitalization of listed companies under the LODR Regulations.

  • Instead of utilizing a single day’s market cap (formerly determined on March 31), SEBI now uses an ‘Average Market Capitalization’ over a certain time period.

2) Bank of Maharashtra tops among PSU banks in Business Growth in FY24; SBI FY24 net profit rises 21.59%

According to publicly available financial data, the Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) was the best performer among Public Sector Banks (PSBs) in terms of business growth for Fiscal Year 2023-24. BoM’s overall business (domestic) increased by a stunning 15.94% in FY24.

3) AIC Signs MoU with CSC to Widen “Sampoorna Pashudhan Kawach” across Rural India

Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd. (AIC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CSC e-Governance Services India Ltd. (CSC) at the AIC Head Office in New Delhi, Delhi, to expand the reach of its cattle insurance product “Sampoorna Pashudhan Kawach,” which is designed to protect farmers’ livestock from unforeseen risks.

CSC would act as a key distribution route under this MoU, using its enormous digital network of 6 million Common Service Centres (CSCs) across rural India.

Objectives:

This partnership intends to address difficulties faced by farmers, including inadequate veterinarian facilities in rural regions and a lack of information regarding livestock insurance advantages and protection.

Dr. William Lai Ching-te, a doctor turned politician, was sworn in as the 16th President of Taiwan (Republic of China (ROC)) during a ceremony at the presidential office in Taipei.

The First Lady and Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao both attended the inaugural ceremony.

William Lai Ching-te replaced Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan’s and Asia’s first female president, who had previously served two consecutive four-year terms from 2016.

Bi-khim Hsiao succeeded Lai Ching-te as Taiwan’s 16th vice president.

7) ISRO’s Mangalyaan-2 Mission to Include Helicopter, Sky Crane, Rover for Navigation on Mars (Current Affairs 21st May 2024)

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced a complete blueprint for its future Mars mission, “Mangalyaan-2”. It was presented during a special presentation at the Space Application Centre (SAC) on the eve of National Technology Day (May 11, 2024).

With the successful launch of the Mangalyaan-2 mission, India will become the fourth country in the world to successfully land a spacecraft on Mars, following the United States of America (USA), Russia, and China.

Key Features:

ISRO intends to employ a Rover and helicopter for Mars exploration, comparable to NASA’s Perseverance Rover.

ISRO is currently developing a supersonic parachute and skycrane system based on NASA deployment procedures.

This deployment procedure will assure a safe and accurate landing of the Indian rover on Mars’ surface.

The Mangalyaan-2 mission will be launched using the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk III (LVM3).

ISRO will create technologies specifically designed to fulfill the particular requirements of the Indian rover, such as refining the sky-crane system and other crucial mission components to resist the harsh conditions of Mars.

It will design a fully functional helicopter capable of operating in Mars’ thin atmosphere.

It will be outfitted with a variety of scientific equipment, including the Martian Boundary Layer Explorer (MARBLE), which can reach heights of up to 100 meters (m), making it ideal for aerial exploration of Mars.

Prior to the mission’s launch, ISRO intends to install a relay communication satellite. It will employ the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) to provide seamless and uninterrupted communication between the Mars mission and Earth.

About NS-25 Mission:

  • This is the seventh human spaceflight for the New Shepard program.

Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), located in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, handed delivered 27,000 AK-203 assault rifles to the Indian army. These assault weapons achieved 25% localization.

  • The Indian Army is scheduled to replace its indigenously built Indian Small Arms Systems (INSAS) rifles, which have been in service for over three decades, with these new rifles.
  • The AK-203 assault rifle has a magazine capacity of 30 rounds. It has an effective range of 800 metres.
  • It includes distinctive features including a folding and adjustable buttstock, a windowed and rifled magazine, and a pistol grip, which make it more ergonomic.
  • It has a gas-powered, rotary bolt locking rifle that can fire 600 rounds in one minute.

The platform intends to assist four sectors: healthcare, government, financial services, and education.

The Hanooman platform takes a two-pronged approach, aiming to provide both an open-source alternative to commercial LLMs for those who prefer transparency and collaboration, while simultaneously addressing the needs of enterprises by offering a closed-source paradigm for on-premise solutions that prioritize control and security.

Hanooman’s features may support informal talks, expert guidance, and complicated technological jobs such as coding and teaching.

SML India has collaborated with HP, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), Yotta, the Government of Telangana, and the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) on this effort.

14) Iran President Ebrahim Raisi Passed away; Mohammad Mokhber Takes Charge as Interim President (Current Affairs 21st May 2024)

Following the reported death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter accident in northern Iran, Iran’s first vice president, Mohammad Mokhber, was nominated as interim president for 50 days (before to necessary presidential elections).

Following the crash that killed Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s government cabinet chooses Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani as interim foreign minister.

Mohammad Mokhber’s appointment to the presidency will require the consent of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Every year on May 20th, the world joins together to celebrate World Metrology Day. This day serves to raise awareness of metrology, the science of measurement, and its countless applications. In turn, it emphasizes the critical role that measurement science plays in our everyday lives.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will officially recognize WMD on May 20, 2024, as UNESCO International Day.

The subject of World Metrology Day 2024 is “Sustainability.”

UNESCO hosted an official launch ceremony for WMD with the theme “We Measure Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow”.

Background:

  • During the 21st General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) declared May 20th to be World Metrology Day in 1999.
  • The first WMD celebration took held on May 20, 2000.

UNESCO Proclamation:

During its 42nd session in November 2023, the UNESCO General Conference, pursuant to Resolution 42 C/Resolution 21, formally declared May 20th to be World Metrology Day
