Let’s take a closer look at the CAT exam subjects list in each section of the article below!
How many Subject (sections) are there in the Exam

CAT Exam Subjects- Overview
Section | Duration | No. of MCQs | No. of non MCQs | Total |
VARC | 40 minutes | 20 | 4 | 24 |
DI LR | 40 minutes | 12 | 8 | 20 |
QA | 40 minutes | 14 | 8 | 22 |
Total | 2 hours | 46 | 20 | 66 |
The CAT Exam is two hours long, and it is anticipated that this will remain the case in 2024.
The CAT exam, as in previous years, will be divided into three sessions: morning, afternoon, and evening. While the papers change between sessions, the scores are adjusted to ensure fairness. The CAT exam includes three subjects: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DI/LR), and Quantitative Ability.
There are 66 questions in all. 46 are multiple-choice questions (MCQs) with four possible answers, one of which is correct. Twenty are non-MCQ questions of the Type-In-The-Answer (TITA) variety.
A correct response earns three marks on MCQs, while an incorrect answer deducts one mark. However, TITA questions have no negative indications.
The QA and DI/LR sections each provide a simple on-screen calculator.
Any Bachelor’s degree holder (with at least 50% marks) and any candidate in their last year of graduation can take the CAT.
