1) Sany India Launches SKT105E, India’s 1st Locally-Made Electric Mining Truck
Sany Heavy Industry India Private Limited (SANY India), a construction and mining equipment manufacturer, has introduced the SKT105E, India’s first domestically made completely electric opencast mining truck.
The SKT105E is designed to endure the extreme conditions seen in open-cast mining operations.
The truck’s electric propulsion technology assures zero emissions and excellent performance while decreasing the carbon impact. This unique design makes the truck an environmentally friendly transportation.
The truck is cost-effective and energy-efficient, with a payload capability of around 70 tons.
SANY India, situated in Pune, Maharashtra, is a fully owned subsidiary of SANY Heavy Industry Construction Limited (SANY Heavy Industry), China. SANY India was incorporated in 2002.

2) Delhi airport Ranked 10th among World’s Top 10 Busiest Airports in 2023: ACI
- The Airports Council International (ACI) World issued its study on the ‘Top 10 Busiest Airports Worldwide for 2023’, with Delhi Airport (Indira Gandhi International Airport – IGIA) ranking tenth in 2023.
- With about 7.22 crore passengers in 2023, IGIA fell somewhat from ninth place in 2022, with Chicago O’Hare Airport surpassing it.
- Despite this, the airport has shown a consistent Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) increase of 20.36% since 2022, demonstrating the strong resurgence of the Indian aviation sector.
- Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, it was rated ninth in 2022, thirteenth in 2021, and seventeenth busiest in 2019.
- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), United States (US), regains the title of world’s busiest with 104.65 million passengers in 2023, albeit remaining 5% below 2019 levels owing to pandemic recovery.

3) Jio Financial and Blackrock form JV to set up Wealth Management & Broking Business
On April 16, 2024, Jio Financial Services (JFS), Reliance Industries Ltd’s (RIL) financial services arm, and BlackRock, Inc. and BlackRock Advisors Singapore Pte inked a 50:50 Joint Venture (JV) agreement to establish a wealth management and brokerage company in India.
This includes forming a wealth management firm and a brokerage firm, both of which require separate Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) licenses.”
Key Points:
- In June 2023, the businesses formed a 50:50 joint venture to deliver asset management services in India, with each investing an initial investment of USD 150 million.
- India’s high-net-worth people own financial assets of USD 1-1.2 trillion, which are mostly handled by institutional platforms, with banks managing one-third and Indian wealth managers handling the remaining 12-14%.
- The newly created joint venture competes with bank-led wealth management businesses and other significant players such as BNP Paribas Wealth Management, 360 One, Nuvama, and Avendus.
- India is now a top worldwide investment destination, with 15.1 crore Demat accounts by March 2024, including a 31 lakh increase in the same month.

4) RBI Directs all REs to Provide KFS to Borrowers w.e.f 1st October 2024
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has ordered all Regulated Entities (REs) (banks and financial institutions) to deliver detailed key facts statements (KFS) to all new retail and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) borrowers beginning October 1, 2024.
This is part of the RBI’s efforts to improve lending procedures’ transparency.
Key Points:
- The statement should include information on the recovery agent’s policies, contact information for complaints, and the possibility of the loan being sold to others in basic and easy-to-understand terms.
- KFS will supply a computation sheet for the loan’s annual percentage rate (APR) and amortization plan over the loan term.
- The APR will include any costs charged by the RE. APR will also include costs imposed on borrowers by REs on behalf of third-party service providers on an actual basis, such as insurance and legal fees.
- The RBI noted that REs may not charge borrowers fees that are not specified in the KFS without the borrower’s informed approval.
- The RBI has directed REs to build up the required systems and processes to execute this advice as soon as practicable. If the borrower agrees to the KFS, the RE will be obligated by them.
- KFS will offer borrowers with a unique proposal number that will be valid for at least 3 working days for loans with a tenor of 7 days or more, and 1 working day for loans with a tenor of less than 7 days.
- The validity period is the amount of time that the borrower has after receiving the KFS from the RE to accept the loan conditions.

5) Deposits of Senior Citizens surged by 143% to Rs 34 lakh crore in 5 years: SBI Report
According to a research by the State Bank of India’s Economic Research Department (ERD), the total amount of deposits in senior citizen accounts climbed by 143% to Rs 34.367 lakh crore by the end of December 2023, up from Rs 13.724 lakh crore in 2018.
Key Findings:
- According to the data, elderly people’ term deposit accounts climbed by almost 81%, reaching 7.4 crore in December 2023 from 4.1 crore in 2018.
- According to the research, at least 7.3 crore of these accounts have balances of more above Rs 15 lakh and earn 7.5% interest on their deposits.
- As a result, older folks would earn around Rs 2.7 lakh crore in interest on their deposits in Fiscal Year 2023-24 (FY24). This comprises Rs 2.57 lakh crore from bank deposits and the balance of Rs 13,000 crore from the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme.
- According to the research, the average amount per senior citizen term deposit account increased by almost 39% to Rs 4.63 lakh by the end of December 2023, up from 3.34 lakh in 2018.
- According to the study, the government collected around Rs 27,000 crore in taxes from older residents on the income gained on term deposits during FY24.
- The Government of India (GoI) has increased the TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) threshold on deposits for elderly persons to Rs 50,000.
- Senior folks are more likely to choose bank deposits after a 50 basis point increase in interest rate and increased deposit insurance coverage.
- Bank deposit insurance cover has been extended from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, effective February 4, 2020.

6) BOI & IMGC Partners to Offer Mortgage Guarantee-Backed Home Loan Products
Bank of India (BOI), an Indian Public Sector Bank (PSB), has entered into an arrangement with India Mortgage Guarantee Corporation (IMGC) to offer mortgage guarantee-backed home loan products in the affordable housing sector.
The agreement will benefit both salaried and self-employed home loan consumers in the affordable housing market.
Significance:
- The IMGC guarantee will assist the bank lower its risk of failure. This will allow the BOI to give borrowers more attractive lending conditions.
- The agreement intends to increase financial inclusion and make homeownership more affordable for Indian borrowers.
- This will assist to enhance the credit delivery system and increase loan flow to the affordable housing industry.
- Through this collaboration, IMGC will utilize its guarantee experience, while BoI will leverage its enormous network of over 5,100 branches across India.
- This will allow BoI to provide more flexible and secure home loan packages to potential homeowners.

9) Kuwait’s Emir Appoints Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah as New PM of Kuwait (Current Affairs 17th April 2024)
Kuwait’s emir, His Highness Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has signed an Emiri decree designating Kuwaiti economist Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah as Prime Minister (PM) of Kuwait and granting him the authority to name new cabinet members.
Sheikh Ahmad succeeds previous Prime Minister Sheikh Dr Mohammed Sabah Al Salem Al-Sabah, who tendered his resignation to the Emir following the upcoming parliamentary election in April 2024.
Note:
- The resignation of Sheikh Dr Mohammed Sabah Al Salem was a procedural action following the election of a new parliament.
- According to Article 57 of Kuwait’s constitution, the present administration must retire before the legislature is inaugurated.
About Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah:
- Sheikh Ahmad belongs to Kuwait’s ruling dynasty, the House of Sabah.
- He began his career in 1977 as a financial analyst at the Kuwait Financial Center. He began working as a Financial Researcher for Kuwait’s Central Bank in 1978.

10) Bain Capital Sells 1.08% Stake in Axis Bank for Rs 3,575 crore (Current Affairs 17th April 2024)
Bain Capital, a private equity company, sold its remaining 1.08% share in Axis Bank for Rs 3,575 crore in an open market deal. The BSE (previously Bombay Stock Exchange) saw the selling of 33.37 million shares for Rs. 1,071 per share.
BofA Securities India Ltd (previously DSP Merrill Lynch Limited) is the transaction’s exclusive bookrunner.
Subsidiary Sell-offs:
- Integral Investments South Asia IV, a Bain Capital company, sold 8.35 million shares.
- BC Asia Investments VII and III sold 14.5 million and 10.5 million shares, respectively.
Note: Bain Capital purchased a stake in Axis Bank in November 2017. In December 2023, it sold 1.1% of its Axis Bank shares for around Rs 3,700 crore in an open market transaction.

11) Gopi Thotakura Named Among 6 Crew Members to fly on Blue Origin’s NS-25 Mission (Current Affairs 17th April 2024)
Gopi Thotakura, an entrepreneur and experienced pilot from Andhra Pradesh, has been selected as one of six crew members for Blue Origin’s New Shepard-25 (NS-25) space tourism mission.
About the Mission:
- This mission will be the New Shepard program’s seventh human flight, and the 25th overall.
- The NS-25 mission will launch from Blue Origin’s West Texas location in the United States of America.
Other 5 Crew members include:
- Mason Angel (USA); Sylvain Chiron (France); Kenneth L. Hess (USA); Carol Schaller (USA); and former United States Air Force Captain Ed Dwight.
- In 1961, then-US President John F. Kennedy picked Ed Dwight as America’s first Black astronaut candidate.
- During the voyage, each astronaut will take a postcard to space on behalf of Blue Origin’s Club for the Future.
About Gopi Thotakura:
- He is now the first Indian space tourist and the second Indian to enter space, after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma of the Indian Army in 1984.
- He co-founded Preserve Life Corp., a global center for holistic wellness and applied health near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the United States.
About New Shepard:

12) ISRO develops lightweight Carbon-Carbon(C-C) Rocket Engine Nozzle (Current Affairs 17th April 2024)
The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has developed a lightweight carbon-carbon (C-C) rocket engine nozzle.
This is a huge advancement in rocket engine technology.
It will aid in improving thrust levels, specific impulse, and thrust-to-weight ratios, increasing the cargo capacity of launch vehicles.
Key Points:
VSSC created a diverging nozzle using innovative materials such as C-C composites, which have unique qualities such as low density, high specific strength, and high stiffness, and can preserve mechanical properties even at elevated temperatures.
C-C composite features a specific anti-oxidation covering of Silicon Carbide (SiC), which increases its operating limitations in an oxidizing environment. Thus, it has a strong corrosion resistance.
Significance:
- ISRO now employs PS4 (4th stage) PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) with twin engines and nozzles built of Columbium (now Niobium) alloy.
- So, these C-C composites will replace metallic diverging nozzles, decreasing the launch vehicle’s bulk by roughly 67%.
- It is estimated to boost PSLV’s payload capacity by 15 kg.

13) Impatiens neo-uncinata: New species of Balsam Discovered in Kerala (Current Affairs 17th April 2024)
During a floristic study in the Agasthyamala biosphere reserve in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, researchers identified a new species of the genus Impatiens (family Balsaminaceae) dubbed “Impatiens neo-uncinata”.
The publication on the finding of the new species appeared in the scientific journal Phytotaxa.
Impatiens neo-uncinata is morphologically similar to Impatiens uncinata (Hook-Tail Balsam), but varies in flower size, basal and distal lobes, dorsal petal, and pollen.
The new species was recognized by its dazzling white blooms with crimson lines and rather big size.
Note:
Impatiens neo-uncinata has only been documented from one location at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 1,250 meters. It is classified as Endangered under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) standards.
Impatiens is a genus of approximately 1000 species found across the tropics and subtropics.

14) Noted Carnatic Musician and Padma Shri Awardee KG Jayan died at the age of 89 (Current Affairs 17th April 2024)
Padma Shri Awardee KG Jayan, a prominent Carnatic musician from Kerala, died at the age of 89 in Ernakulam district, Kerala. He was born on November 21, 1934, in Kottayam, Kerala.
He was the father of the famous Malayalam actor, Manoj K. Jayan.
About KG Jayan:
- He began his career in Carnatic music at the age of nine, under the tutelage of Carnatic legends such as the Alathur Brothers and Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar.
- KG Jayan and his brother K.G.Vijayan were known as “Jaya-Vijaya” in the Malayalam music business.
- KG Jayan wrote over 1,000 songs and composed music for several Tamil and Malayalam films.
- Both Jaya-Vijaya created hundreds of devotional songs dedicated to Lord Ayappa. The popular Ayappa devotional songs include Sreekovil Nadathurannu and Hariharasuthane.
Noted Work
- Some of his timeless masterpieces are “Ayyanu Thunayay”, “Mamala Vaazhum”, “Sreekovil Nada Thurannu”, “Malamukalil Vaazhum Devaa”, and so on.
- Jaya-Vijaya wrote music for a number of well-known films, including Bhoomiyile, Malakhamar, Dharamasastha, Nirakudam, Sneham, and Padhapooja.
Awards:
- After being established jointly by the Kerala Government and the Travancore Devaswom Board, the Harivarasanam Award was first presented to G. Jayan in 2013.
- Previously, in 1991, the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, an organization under the Kerala government, had bestowed upon him their annual award.
- G. Jayan received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award in 2019, for his contributions to art.

World Quantum Day is held yearly on April 14 to increase public knowledge and understanding of quantum science and technology throughout the world.
The third World Quantum Day takes place on April 14, 2024.
Background:
- The World Quantum Day was founded on April 14, 2021, by quantum scientists from over 65 nations worldwide.
- The first-ever global World Quantum Day was held on April 14, 2022.
Why April 14? - The date of World Quantum Day is April 14 (4/14 in month/day format), which refers to the rounded initial digits of Planck’s constant, 4.14.
- Planck’s constant is 4.1356677×10^−15 electron volt second (eV.s) = 0.000 000 000 000 004 1356677 eV.s.
- It is a basic constant in quantum physics that represents the interaction of energy and time.
Note: On May 2, 2023, the United States Senate passed a bipartisan resolution proposed by Senators Todd Young and Maggie Hassan to honor and support the purposes of World Quantum Day.
Significance:
- World Quantum Day is a decentralized and bottom-up project that involves scientists, engineers, educators, communicators, entrepreneurs, and others, and promotes involvement from a variety of backgrounds.
- It’s a day to honor the language of the cosmos, quantum mechanics.
- Quantum mechanics is the fundamental theory of physics that describes the behavior of elementary particles, which are the building blocks of the universe.

- Encourage public participation in quantum science and technology.
- Explain its significance in comprehending nature and technological achievements.

2024 Event in India:

Each year, on April 15th, World Art Day (WAD) celebrates the diversity of creative expressions by raising awareness, recognizes artists’ contributions to sustainable development, and further strengthens the relationship between artistic works and society.
WAD commemorates the promotion, development, distribution, and enjoyment of art.
The International Association of Art/Association Internationale des Arts Plastiques (IAA/AIAP) organizes the day each year in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Background:
- During its 17th General Assembly in Guadalajara, Mexico, the IAA/AIAP overwhelmingly supported the Turkish National Committee’s motion to establish April 15 as World Art Day.
- On April 15, 2012, the world commemorated the very first World Art Day.
- Subsequently, during its 40th session in 2019, UNESCO’s General Conference officially declared World Art Day.
- Becky Mate, an Artists for A Better World (AFABW) International member, launched World Art Day locally in 1998 and has championed the event ever since.

- On April 16, 1999, a multidisciplinary organization consisting of physicians, speech-language pathologists, and singing voice therapists launched the Brazilian National Voice Day.
- In 2002, Professor Mario Andrea, a Portuguese laryngologist and then-President of the European Laryngological Society, advocated making the Day a global event.
- AAO-HNS recognized the occasion as “World Voice Day” in 2002, led by the Speech, Voice, and Swallowing Disorders Committee.
