1) IndianOil Equips Indian Army with Green Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus; MoU Signed to Promote Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Tech
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IndianOil) has delivered a cutting-edge green hydrogen fuel cell bus to the Indian Army at the National War Memorial, India Gate, New Delhi. This will encourage sustainable, environmentally friendly transportation options.
IndianOil and the Indian Army have also inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pioneer the use of hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty e-mobility applications.

The handover and signing ceremony took place in the presence of General Manoj Pande, Chief of Army Staff (CAS), and Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of IndianOil.
About the Project:
The project evaluates fuel-cell electric buses for public transit in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) climatic conditions.
It also assesses the impact of local fuel and air quality on fuel cell systems and vehicles, as well as the effectiveness, longevity, and operational reliability of fuel cell buses for public fleet utilisation.
Additional info:
IndianOil now operates around 15 fuel cell buses in the Delhi-NCR region, amassing a total mileage of 300,000 kilometers (km), or 20000 km each vehicle.

2) GAIL Inaugurated its First 10MW Green Hydrogen Plant in MP
GAIL has opened its first major Green Hydrogen (GH2) Plant at the Vijaipur complex in Madhya Pradesh (MP). It has been erected in accordance with the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
- The facility has the ability to create 4.3 tonnes per day (TPD) of hydrogen via a 10 MegaWatt (MW) Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyzer that uses renewable energy to perform water electrolysis.
- The 10 MW PEM Electrolyzer for the green hydrogen production unit has been brought from Canada.
- The hydrogen produced at this plant will be 99.99% pure by volume and generated at a pressure of 30 kilograms per square centimeter (kg/cm2).
The 10 MW facility, which cost Rs 231 crore, is a significant step toward realizing GAIL’s objective of net-zero status by 2040 and the National Green Hydrogen (NHM) goal of 5 million tons of annual green hydrogen production capacity in India by 2030.
GAIL is also building around 20 MW solar power plants at Vijaipur (both ground-mounted and floating) to cover the green power requirements of the 10 MW PEM Electrolyzer.

3) SEBI Mandates Social Enterprises on SSE to Submit Annual Impact Report for FY24
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has directed social businesses that have registered or collected money on the Social Stock Exchange (SSE) to submit a ‘Annual Impact Report’ for fiscal year 2023-24 to the exchange by the end of October 2024.
In September 2023, SEBI mandated that social enterprises that obtained money through SSE submit their annual impact reports within 90 days of the end of the fiscal year.
Note:
SSE’s annual report provides both qualitative and quantitative facts about the social enterprise’s effect, such as strategic intent, planning, strategy, and an impact scorecard.
Not-for-profit organizations (NPOs) registered on the SSE are required to report their yearly activity on the exchange for fiscal year 24.
If a NPO is registered but does not have any publicly traded stocks, the report should highlight major activities, interventions, and programmes, among other information.
Key Highlights:
SEBI has appointed two additional Self-Regulatory Organisations (SROs) to assess the societal impacts of social enterprise activities: the ICMAI Social Auditors Organisation under the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) and the ICSI Institute of Social Auditors under the Institute of Company Secretaries of India.
These organizations can serve as forums for registering social auditors. These are added to the SRO specified by the ICAI for the social impact assessor.
Social Impact Assessor :
A social impact assessor is someone who has completed a certification program established by the National Institute of Securities Market (NISM) and is registered with a self-regulatory organization such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India or another similar agency.
Social Stock Exchange :
A social stock exchange is a platform that is distinct from current stock exchanges that assists non-profit organizations and for-profit social companies in raising cash from the capital market.
Social Enterprises:
- Social businesses include both non-profit and for-profit social companies that strive to achieve social goals.
- They are expected to participate in social activities classified into 16 main categories by SEBI.

4) Government Set to Launch New National Portal “NHCX” to Simplify Health Insurance Claims
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) plans to develop a uniform site known as the National Health Claim Exchange (NHCX) to make it easier to file health insurance claims. Its goal is to promote transparency, ensure interoperability of health insurance claims, and aid to improve the efficiency of the health insurance system.
The portal is planned to open in the next two or three months.
Key Points:
- The National Health Authority (NHA) created the NHCX as part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
- As of May 24, 2024, India’s Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) totaled 62.12 crore.
- The portal will act as a single-window platform for health insurance companies, hospitals, and policyholders, allowing for quicker and speedier health insurance claim settlement.
- The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has recommended all insurers and service providers to integrate with the NHCX platform.
- The government plans to integrate around 50 health insurance firms and 200-250 hospitals across the country using the NHCX platform.

After IRDAI ordered that all insurance policies be issued electronically beginning April 1, resulting in an individual’s insurance plans being consolidated in his e-Insurance Account (eIA), NHCX is the next significant reform in the insurance business.
The IRDAI previously authorized ‘Bima Sugam’, another insurance industry innovation that would enable an online marketplace for policyholders to compare pricing and features of all types of insurance products. Purchase insurance goods such as life, health, vehicle, and travel insurance.

5) RBI Imposes Monetary Penalty on ICICI Bank, Yes Bank For Rule Violations
ICICI Bank Limited has been fined Rs 1 crore by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for providing term loans to particular businesses to substitute budgeted resources for specified projects without doing adequate due diligence.
ICICI Bank received a penalty for failing to comply with ‘Loans and Advances – Statutory and Other Restrictions’.
- It authorized the loans without thoroughly investigating the projects’ feasibility and bankability.
- The repayment of these loans was made with budgeted funds, and the bank did not check that the financing proposals were for particular, monitorable projects.
- The RBI also levied a Rs 91 lakh monetary penalty on Yes Bank Limited for several breaches of banking regulations.
Yes Bank violated RBI rules by collecting fees on accounts with zero balances and creating internal accounts in customers’ names for unauthorized reasons including storing cash and routing consumer transactions.
The violations at Yes Bank and ICICI Bank were discovered during an assessment of the books as part of the RBI’s supervisory evaluation for fiscal year 2022.

6) RIL Partners With NIL To Accelerate New Energy Investments (Current Affairs 29th May 2024)
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has signed a technology license deal with Norway-based Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser AS, a fully-owned subsidiary of Norway-based Nel ASA, to accelerate its investments in electrolysers, notably for green hydrogen generation.
- The arrangement grants RIL an exclusive license for Nel’s alkaline electrolysers in India, as well as the right to produce the electrolysers for internal use across the world.
- Nel ASA has a 10-15% global market share in electrolysers, with 350MW and 400MW deliveries in 2023-2024.
- This will assist RIL in meeting its lofty goal of 1-1-1 (one kilogram of green hydrogen accessible for USD1 in a decade) for green-hydrogen production, whereas the worldwide objective is roughly USD2 per kg by 2030.
The Indian government has set a target of 500 gigawatts (GW) of installed renewable energy by 2030. Solar is predicted to account for the biggest proportion, with 280GW.

7) 77th Cannes Film Festival: Sean Baker’s Anora won Palme d’Or & Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light won Grand Prix (Current Affairs 29th May 2024)
The 77th Cannes International Film Festival took place from May 14 to May 25, 2024, in Cannes, France. Sean Baker’s American comedy-drama film ‘Anora’ received the Palme d’Or, the top honor at the Cannes Film Festival.
- Payal Kapadia’s Indian film ‘All We Imagine as Light’ took up the Grand Prix, the festival’s second highest honor. She became the first Indian to get this honor.
- Santosh Sivan, an Indian cinematographer and film director, received the Pierre Angénieux Tribute Award for his distinguished career and accomplishments.
- He was the first Asian to receive this honor.
- Anasuya Sengupta, an Indian actress, received Best Actress in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ category for her work in ‘The Shameless’.

8) DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat Gets One Year Extension in Service (Current Affairs 29th May 2024)
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) proposal to extend the tenure of Dr. Samir Venkatapathy Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D), MoD, and Chairman of Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), by one year beyond the age of superannuation (May 31, 2024).
He will remain in his current post until May 31, 2025.
He has been the Secretary of DDR&D and Chairman of DRDO since August 25th, 2022, and is due to retire on May 31st, 2024.
About Samir V Kamat:
- Samir V Kamat started DRDO in 1989 as a Scientist ‘C’ at the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) in Hyderabad, and advanced to become the lab’s Director in 2015.
- He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and the Institution of Engineers India (IEI), as well as a Life Member of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Materials Research Society of India (MRSI), and Magnetic Society of India (MSI).

9) Krish and Bhoomi: DD Kisan Launches its First AI Anchors in 50 Languages (Current Affairs 29th May 2024)
Doordarshan Kisan (DD Kisan), a Doordarshan channel, is the first Indian government television station to deploy two artificial intelligence (AI) anchors, AI Krish and AI Bhoomi, who can talk in 50 different languages and give agricultural research material.
It was introduced on May 26, 2024, to commemorate DD Kisan’s ninth anniversary.
The primary goal is to teach farmers on agricultural research, market trends, weather updates, and government programs. The channel would be available to farmers in all Indian states.
The AI anchors may read news all day and night, any day of the year.
The DD Kisan channel contributes to strengthening the three-dimensional idea of agriculture, which encompasses balanced farming, animal husbandry, and planting.

10) Indian Premier League 2024: Kolkata Knight Riders won the championship defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (Current Affairs 29th May 2024)
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), captained by Shreyas Iyer (Indian cricketer), won the champions title for the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), captained by Pat Cummins (Australian cricketer), by eight wickets in the finals held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN).
This is KKR’s third IPL championship. The squad previously won the title in 2012 and 2014, both captained by Gautam Gambhir.
The final between KKR and SRH lasted only 29 overs, making it the shortest IPL playoff game (without weather delays).

11) Dipa Karmarkar Becomes 1st Indian Gymnast to Win Gold Medal at Asian Gymnastics Championships 2024 (Current Affairs 29th May 2024)
Dipa Karmarkar (from Tripura) became the first Indian gymnast to win a gold medal in the women’s vault apparatus at the Asian Gymnastics Championships 2024 (11th Senior Women Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships), which took place from May 24th to 26th, 2024 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
This is the first time an Indian gymnast has won gold in any event at the Asian Championships.
Kim Son-hyang and Jo Kyong-byol of North Korea won silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Note: Previously, Indian gymnasts earned four bronze medals in the Asian Championships. Dipa Karmakar gained four bronze medals in the women’s vault in 2015, Ashish Kumarmen in the floor exercise in 2006, and Pranati Nayak in the women’s vault in 2019 and 2022.
About Dipa Karmarkar:
- Dipa Karmarkar won bronze in the women’s vault final at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in Scotland. It was her first international medal.
- In 2016, she became India’s first female gymnast to compete in the Olympics. She finished fourth at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- She won the gold medal in the 2018 International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series in Mersin, Turkey, making her the first Indian to do so in a worldwide gymnastics tournament.

12) Archery World Cup 2024: Indian Women’s Compound Team Wins Gold & Mixed Team Wins Silver (Current Affairs 29th May 2024)
India won two medals (1 gold and 1 silver) at the Archery World Cup 2024 Stage 2 in Yecheon, Republic of Korea (South Korea), which took place from May 21 to 26, 2024.
The Indian women’s compound team of Aditi Gopichand Swami, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, and Parneet Kaur won gold, defeating the Turkish team of Hazal Burun, Ayse Bera Suzer, and Begum Yuva.
India’s mixed archery team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Priyansh won silver. Olivia Dean and Sawyer Sullivan of the United States of America (USA) beat them in the finals.

13) Formula 1: Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc wins Monaco F1 GP 2024 (Current Affairs 29th May 2024)
On May 26, 2024, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, a Monaco-based racing driver, won the Monaco Grand Prix (GP) 2024 (formally Formula 1 (FI) Grand Prix de Monaco 2024) at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo. This is Charles Leclerc’s first victory since the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix, ending a 39-race winless streak.
With this triumph, Charles became the first Monegasque driver to win the Monaco Grand Prix in World Championship history, and the first since Louis Chiron in 1931 (the third edition).
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri of Australia finished second, while Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz of Spain finished third in the Monaco Grand Prix 2024.
Note that he had never finished on the podium at this track in F1 or F2.

Charles Leclerc achieved his fifth podium position in the first eight races of the season. This exceeds his previous record of four podium finishes in the first 20 races of 2023.

The International Day of Action for Women’s Health (also known as International Women’s Health Day) is commemorated annually on May 28 to promote women’s health and well-being across the world, particularly in terms of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

World Menstrual Hygiene (MH) Day is an annual global campaign held on May 28th to raise awareness about the significance of effective Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) and address the challenges that women and girls face during menstruation.
World Menstrual Health and Hygiene Day brings together non-profits, governments, people, corporations, and the media to promote excellent menstrual hygiene.

- The 2024 topic seeks to eliminate the stigma associated with menstruation while also ensuring global access to goods, education and infrastructure.

- WASH United established World MH Day in 2013. WASH United serves as the worldwide coordinator and international secretariat for MH Day.
- WASH United strives to create a world where everyone has access to clean drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), including menstrual hygiene.
Why 28 May?
The organizers chose 28 May, the 28th day of the 5th month, as MH Day. This choice reflects the average duration of a menstrual cycle, which is 28 days. Additionally, a person typically menstruates for 5 days each month.
Note: The International Day of Action for Women’s Health, observed on May 28 by women’s health activists worldwide since 1987, also coincides with the celebration. Consequently, this alignment enhances global awareness and support for women’s health issues.
Report on Menstrual Health:
On World menstruation Health Day, the World Health Organization (WHO)/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) for WASH released a study titled “Progress on drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene in schools 2000-2023: Special focus on menstrual health.”
For the first time, the paper examined growing national statistics on MHH in schools around the globe.
Key Findings:
- Menstrual health education is provided in just 2 out of every 5 schools (39%) worldwide, with secondary schools providing the highest rates.
