1) WIPO Concludes New Treaty on IP, GRs & ATK; Benefits Global South & India
Members of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) have accepted a new convention on intellectual property (IP), genetic resources (GRs), and associated traditional knowledge (ATK).
For the first time, the system of knowledge and wisdom that has supported economies, communities, and cultures for ages has been included into the global intellectual property system.
This will assist countries in the global South, particularly India, a huge biodiversity hotspot with a wealth of traditional knowledge and wisdom.
It bridges the gap between local communities and their GRs, as well as ATK, for the first time in the global IP community.
Mandatory Disclosure Obligations:
- The treaty’s adoption and entrance into effect will oblige contracting parties to impose obligatory disclosure duties for patent applicants about the origin of GRs.
- The pact requires states, particularly industrialized ones, to alter their legal structures to ensure effective implementation.
Protection for Indian GRs:
The pact provides extra safeguards for Indian GRs and ATK, protecting them against misuse in nations without disclosure rules.
Only 35 nations now have disclosure obligations, which are often not required and lack suitable fines for effective enforcement.
Safeguarding Biodiversity and Innovation
In addition to protecting biodiversity, the WIPO convention improves the openness of the patent system.
It fosters innovation by encouraging inclusive involvement and meeting the needs of all nations and communities.
Global Support and Adoption:
- The treaty’s adoption, with consent from over 150 nations, is the result of two decades of talks.
- The majority of industrialized countries produce intellectual property by using these resources and expertise to research and innovation.
- The support of developed nations is an important step toward reconciling competing perspectives within the intellectual property system.
About World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO):
WIPO, founded in 1967, is a self-sustaining institution of the United Nations. It is a worldwide platform for IP services, policy, knowledge, and collaboration.

2) NSE Lowered Tick Size to 1 Paisa for Stock Price Below Rs 250
The National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) stated that it has reduced the tick size for all equities in the cash category from 5paisa (now) to 1paisa for securities valued below Rs 250. The major goal of this increased tick size is to increase liquidity and improve price discovery by allowing for more precise price changes.
The increased tick size will go effective on June 10th, 2024.
Also, starting July 8, 2024, stock futures will have the same tick size as the cash market sector.
Key Points:
- The increased tick size will apply to all securities except Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), which include the EQ, BE, BZ, BO RL, and AF series.
- The tick size for T+1 settlement securities will likewise apply to T+0 (T0) settlement securities.
- All price-related computations, such as the closing price, base price, common equilibrium price, and settlement price, shall be framed using the security’s applicable tick size.
- On a monthly basis, the NSE shall assess and alter the tick size of each security based on the closing prices on the last trading day of each month to establish the appropriate ticket size for the next month.
About Tick Size:
- It is the smallest price difference between two successive bid (buy) and offer (sell) prices.
- For example, if a stock has a tick size of Rs 0.10, or 10 paisa, and the Last Traded Price (LTP) is Rs 200, the next probable bid prices are Rs 199.90, 199.80, 199.70, 199.60, and so on.
- In this example, the bid price cannot be Rs 199.86 since it does not match the tick size requirement of Rs 0.10.
Note: NSE’s new tick size is more competitive with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which introduced the same 1 paisa tick size for equities under Rs 100 in March 2023.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc has raised its prediction for India’s Growth Domestic Product (GDP) for Calendar Year 2024 (CY24), higher by 10 Basis Points (bps) to 6.7% from 6.6%.
It was been projected that Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may lower the interest rates in the 4th Quarter (Q4) of current Calendar Year (CY24) or Q3FY25(2024-25).
Key Points:

- According to Goldman Sachs, the RBI would modify monetary policy only if it observes improvement in the monsoons and Kharif crop planting, after which it will analyze the food inflation trajectory in the second half of fiscal year 24.
- It has altered its prior projection of an interest rate cut by the RBI from Q3 to Q4 for CY24, with the first cut most likely occurring at the December 2024 Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.
- It also projected a total easing cycle of 50 basis points in rate decreases by the RBI, with the first 25 basis points in Q4-CY24 and Q1-CY25.
It has also changed its forecast for the Federal Reserve, the central bank of the United States of America (U.S.A.), to drop interest rates for the first time in fiscal year 24. The second rate decrease is expected in December.
