CAT vs. NMAT: Qualification Standards
Graduation is the primary prerequisite for appearing in the CAT exam. The candidates must get at least 50% of the possible points in order to graduate in any field (45% for those in the reserved category). Though the official notification makes no mention of this percentage criterion, the authority thoroughly examines a candidate’s graduation results as part of the IIM selection process.
Candidates for the NMAT must have graduated from an accredited university. They must receive a combined score of 50%. Examine CAT eligibility requirements in depth to learn about the qualifications needed to take the national MBA test, CAT.
CAT vs. NMAT: Course Content and Topic Coverage
There are some differences between the content and syllabus of these two exams. Exam parts for both the CAT and NMAT are three. The three exam sections in the CAT syllabus are QA, DILR, and VARC.
Three areas are also covered in the NMAT syllabus, though. It consists of:
Language Skills
Logical Reasoning
Quantitative Skills
Paper Pattern: NMAT vs. CAT
The CAT and NMAT test formats differ significantly. In addition to multiple choice questions (MCQs), candidates must also respond to timed interview questions (TITAs) in the case of the CAT exam.
Furthermore, there is no negative marking scheme in the NMAT. However, MCQs alone receive negative markings in CAT. However, the authorities will subtract one point for each incorrect response.
Take note of the table below for information on the CAT and NMAT exam patterns.
Components | CAT | NMAT |
Total Number of Questions | 66 Questions | 108 Questions |
Number of Sections | 3 Sections

Weightage-Related Differences Between CAT and NMAT
Both the NMAT and CAT have distinct sectional weights. Take note of the table below for the most recent CAT sectional weightage.
Exam Sections | Total Questions | Section-wise Time Limit |
VARC | 24 | 40 minutes |
DILR | 20 | 40 minutes |
QA | 22 | 40 minutes |
Total | 66 | 120 minutes |
The NMAT exam’s sectional weighting is shown in the table below.
Sections | Questions | Section-wise Time Limit |
Language Skills | 36 | 28 Minutes |
Quantitative Skills | 36 | 52 Minutes |
Logical Reasoning | 36 | 40 Minutes |
Total | 108 | 120 Minutes |
The combined duration of these two tests is 120 minutes. Yet, the CAT and NMAT have distinct sectional times. Therefore, if candidates are getting ready for both of these tests, they need to be aware of that.
CAT vs. NMAT: Level of Difficulty
The difficulty levels of the two exams are significantly different. Because NMAT is substantially easier than CAT, most applicants who prepare for CAT may attempt it with ease. So long as you are ready for the CAT, you shouldn’t have any trouble with the NMAT.
With a few notable exceptions, the majority of the topics are the identical for both tests. But the only distinction between the two exams is that the CAT is not based on speed, whereas the NMAT is. This is yet another explanation for NMAT by GMAC’s simplicity. The focus is more on providing prompt and correct answers to problems than on the methodology used to do so.
Comparing CAT and NMAT: How to Answer the Question Paper
This is an important and interesting section. The methodology for these two tests differs greatly, despite the fact that the subjects might be the same. The CAT questions require careful consideration and meticulous answer-making. Because the questions are more challenging, you might require more time (the ideal amount of time) to finish them, but you still have to finish them. If you give too many wrong replies just for the fun of answering, you’ll run into issues.
The NMAT, on the other hand, places a strong focus on speed. You ought to respond to inquiries as soon as possible. But if you want to score 220 or over, accuracy is also essential. So how do you strike a balance between accuracy and speed?
Learn how to compute quickly and efficiently.
Make sure you understand the basics and principles well enough to avoid having to waste time arguing over which topic the question is about.
There are also minor differences between the CAT and NMAT syllabuses. The NMAT employs a different kind of logic than the CAT. There are some areas in the CAT logical reasoning part that are not addressed in the NMAT syllabus.
