  6. Time, Speed, and Distance
  7. Time and Work
  8. Mixtures and Allegations

Detailed Topic-wise Preparation Strategy

1. Ratio and Proportion

  • Key Concepts:
    • Ratio comparison
    • Proportion and direct/inverse variation
    • Partnership (profit sharing based on investment)
  • Tips:
    • Practice problems involving dividing quantities in a given ratio.
    • Learn shortcuts for solving proportion problems.

2. Percentages

  • Key Concepts:
    • Percentage increase/decrease
    • Applications in profit/loss, population growth, etc.
  • Tips:
    • Memorize percentage equivalents of fractions (e.g., 1 / 4=25%).
    • Practice problems involving successive percentage changes.

3. Profit and Loss

  • Key Concepts:
    • Cost price (CP), selling price (SP), profit, and loss
    • Discounts and marked price
  • Tips:
    • Learn formulas:
      • Profit = SP – CP
      • Loss = CP – SP
      • Profit % = Profit / CP × 100
    • Practice problems involving successive discounts.

4. Simple and Compound Interest

  • Key Concepts:
    • Simple Interest (SI): SI = P×R×T/ 100
    • Compound Interest (CI): A = P(1+R/100)^T
  • Tips:
    • Understand the difference between SI and CI.
    • Practice problems involving annual/half-yearly/quarterly compounding.

5. Averages

  • Key Concepts:
    • Mean, weighted average
    • Problems involving age, marks, etc.
  • Tips:
    • Learn the formula: Average = Sum of Values / Number of Values.
    • Practice problems involving the replacement or removal of items.

6. Time, Speed, and Distance

  • Key Concepts:
    • Relationship between speed, distance, and time: Speed = Distance / Time
    • Relative speed (trains, boats, and streams)
  • Tips:
    • Convert units (e.g., km/h to m/s) for easier calculations.
    • Practice problems involving trains, circular tracks, and upstream/downstream.

7. Time and Work

  • Key Concepts:
    • Work efficiency
    • Work done by individuals or groups
  • Tips:
    • Learn the formula: Work = Rate × Time
    • Practice problems involving pipes and cisterns.

8. Mixtures and Allegations

  • Key Concepts:
    • Mixing two or more quantities with different prices or concentrations
    • Allegation rule for finding ratios
  • Tips:
    • Learn the allegation formula:Quantity of Cheaper / Quantity of Dearer = (Price of Dearer − Mean Price) / (Mean Price − Price of Cheaper)
    • Practice problems involving mixtures of liquids, grains, etc.

Preparation Tips

  1. Understand Concepts: Focus on understanding the basics of each topic.
  2. Practice Regularly: Solve at least 20-30 questions daily from each topic.
  3. Use Shortcuts: Learn shortcuts and tricks for faster calculations.

Example Questions

  1. Ratio and Proportion:
    • If A: B = 3:4,  and B: C=5:6, ind A: C and .
      • Solution: A: C=A: B×B: C = 3: 4×5: 6=15: 24=5: 8 and .
  2. Percentages:
    • If the price of a product increases by 20%, by what percentage should you reduce the consumption to keep the expenditure the same?
      • Solution: Let original price = ₹100. New price = ₹120. To keep expenditure constant, reduce consumption by 20/120×100 = 16.67%.
  3. Profit and Loss:
    • A shopkeeper sells an item at a 10% loss. If the selling price is ₹450, find the cost price.
      • Solution: SP = 90% of CP. So, CP = 450/0.9 = ₹500.
  4. Time and Work:
    • A can complete a work in 30 days, and B can complete it in 15 days. How long will it take them to complete the work together?
      • Solution: A′s rate = 1/30, B′s rate = 1/15. Combined rate = 1/30+1/15=3/30=1/10. Time taken = 10 days.

By focusing on these strategies and practicing consistently, you can master Arithmetic for MBA CET 2025. Good luck!
